TexasISD.com
Great site to see the issues facing all school districts in Texas. It also shows the large number of open administration positions around the state. It is a bit of an eye openner for those of us who may have bought into the political diatribes against the excesses of school administrators. If this is such a great job why are there so many open positions?

Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills
Here is a link to the Texas Education Agency's page on Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). This is the listing of all the teaching objectives for each grade level and subject area. It is not only essential knowledge for students but it is essential knowledge for parents and grandparents if they want to know what their children or grandchildren are learning every year.

Familyschool.com Web site
This is the old Family School website. Much of this material has been or will be intergrated into the Teachers' Alley site. Many of the links are old and non-active.

Five Components of Reading
What are the five essential components, and where do they come from?

The Redirection Connection
Both Barbara and Chris have completed training here. We highly recommend it for all parents and grandparents, teachers too! Using a non-judgmental, democratic approach, students are trained to deal with relationship issues, whether within the family or in a professional setting. Parents, as well as child care and teaching professionals, have found the skills learned in the Redirecting Children's Behavior course to be incredibly valuable tools used in everyday life.

Austin Home Base
This philosophy closely matches that of Family School, a school that Barbara and I planned out over ten(10) years ago. We bought 7.5 acres on Brodie Lane to build it but grandkids moved and we bought a store instead:-). If you are looking at alternative schooling options for your children check Austin Home Base out.

David Williams IV
This is a shameless plug for our son's first novel. Great mystery read with real insight into the world of the paramedic. Here is the Amazon listing.

Oak Hill Gazette
Our local newspaper! Yes, that means it is locally owned and is a small business like Teachers' Alley. If we want to keep small business alive in we need to support our local businesses. (yes of course that means Teachers' Alley as well :-) Take a look at this new website and try to support the advertisers, write letters to the editor and tell them about local news events. This way you can truly make it your newspaper! Same way for politicians by the way, write them letters, tell them about local concerns and support the ones who are responsive. That's the way to truly make it your government:-)(sorry couldn't help myself-Chris)

Managing Cooperative Classrooms
Even after taking classes in cooperative learning, some teachers and parents find daily implementation a major challenge. Managing Cooperative Classrooms offers specific suggestions for converting lessons that are dominated by the teacher into cooperative, student centered learning experiences. The text includes explanations of the elements that differentiate cooperative groups from traditional ones. This is a book previously published by Barbara Frandsen under Family School Publications. It is offered here for use by her students and other individuals for no charge.
