Read Pause Think

After introducing TV Recall (See Comprehension and Reading to Children), in which you do all of the reading to children, you can guide them to the next strategy, Read Pause Think.

Ask each child to imagine that behind his or her eyes there is a blank screen. In order to explain the concept of the internal screen, ask children to describe characters they have seen in recent movies. Say, "We don't even have to go to the theater for you to remember how the characters look. You see the characters on the screens behind your eyes."

Begin Read Pause Think by asking children to follow the print as you read. Stop often to ask, "What are you seeing on your screens?" After some time, suggest that the children use their screens even when they read for themselves.
